TEATRO REGIO SAYS FAREWELL 25 August 2012

EL REGIO SE DESPIDE

Tonight, Saturday, on the last night of “The Golden 20” at the Teatro Regio, there will be another top-notch double concert: the Orquesta Típica, conducted by Agustín Guerrero, will perform at 8 in a show titled Resurgimiento (just like their debut album released in 2011), rendering 21st-century tangos as part of their efforts to contribute to the present and future of tango. As a complement to their show, there will be a performance by dancers Daniel Salazar-Valentina Lamas and Hernán Robledo-Florencia Picot. This orchestra, created in 2009 and composed of 15 musicians, offers a repertoire mostly consisting of pieces written by its director and contemporary composers, and arrangements made by the orchestra. And then the duo of flutist Paulina Fain and pianist Exequiel Mantega, exponents of a new old way of interpreting tango for their particular instrumental combination, will perform at 9 p.m. In this setting, they explore the borders of the genre, putting forward a new old sound, palpable on their two releases: + Tango (2006) and Secretos en Reunión (2008). Additionally, the duo composed the score the score (24 tangos, milongas and waltzes) for the show Estación: Tango!, which was staged in Switzerland and Germany in 2007.

Today, Saturday, at noon, the main dance floor of the Centro de Exposiciones was the stage for an intense, emotionally-charged Stage Tango semifinal, where couples were selected to advance to the great final, which will be held on Tuesday 28 at 7 p.m. at the Luna Park stadium. In all cases, they are dancers with a high level of performance, who will now go for the big prize this coming Tuesday in a comprehensive show featuring, apart from the great final, the concert Piazzolla Electrónico and the joint performance of legendary dancer María Nieves with the champions from previous years. THREE SINGERS ON STAGE 24 August 2012

TRES CANTORES A ESCENA

Today at 9 p.m. at the Centro de Exposiciones, singers Jesús Hidalgo, Esteban Riera and Hernán Genovese will share the stage in the show titled Tango a tres bandas, one of the most original, most successful concert series on the Buenos Aires tango circuit: it has gained praise and drawn crowds to the historic bar “Los 36 billares,” from where the title name comes. They are three of the most distinguished singers of the new generation (they were all recognized at the “Hugo del Carril” Tango Competition), who will play a repertoire of tango classics such as “Si soy así,” “La última curda” and “Que falta que me hacés,” among others, accompanied by guitarists Aníbal Cornigli, Pablo Alessia and Joaquín Althabe.

ANOTHER TOP-NOTCH DOUBLE SHOW AT TEATRO REGIO 24 August 2012

OTRO DOBLETE DE LUJO EN EL REGIO

The new wave of Buenos Aires tango continues to be showcased at Teatro Regio, one of the new venues of TANGO BUENOS AIRES FESTIVAL AND WORLD CUP. Tonight at 8, as part of the “The Golden 20” section, the Quinteto El Descarte will share the stage with the youth ensemble (put together specially for the occasion) Los Corrales de Miserere. First, the Quinteto El Descarte – composed of Santiago Polimeni (bandoneon), Cristian Asato (piano), Adrián Lacruz (guitar), César Rago (violin) and Pablo Guzmán (double bass) – will preview material of their upcoming new album, El Descarte. And then, Los Corrales de Miserere will pay homage to the great Ubaldo De Lío (deceased in April at the age of 83) with songs played in duo, trio and quartet settings, evoking the sound from the ensembles featuring one of tango history’s most exquisite guitarists, a vital part in a renowned duo together with Horacio Salgán. This will be a night of reunion: with 21st-centrury style and aesthetics, young musicians celebrate the works of several major figures of tango of all times. Admission, be reminded, is free, on a first-come, first-served basis until the capacity of the venue is reached.

Taking center stage are Sexteto Meridional, a young ensemble empowered by singer Esteban Riera who, bearing the mark and style of the historical Sexteto Tango, will premiere his album Chapado a la Antigua; and Cuarteto Sur, another ensemble of young performers reinventing a tradition: the guitar-bandoneon duet immortalized by Roberto Grela and Aníbal Troilo.
