Synopsis

“Georgian Neorrealism” might be a way to describe this and some other films that are surfacing in international festivals (Susa was premiered at the last edition of Rotterdam). It’s worth mentioning that the reality this films refer to is much more harsh than the one depicted by DeSica and his compagni, although the post war context is relatively similar. Susa is a twelve year old boy who makes a living as a delivery boy for an illegal vodka factory, where his mother works. The life conditions are as precarious as the alcohol distribution system, done by foot and avoiding police agents. As if this wasn’t enough, the kid also suffers abuse from the neighborhood gang. His only hope lies in the return of his father, which he imagines as imminent but never actually comes true. Lacking as much humor as the distance needed for a wide perspective, Susa is an uncompromising film that doesn’t provide any false certainties to calm the spectator.
