Synopsis

In this essay Sallmann tries to expand his view of Neukölln, the neighborhood in west side Berlin where he lived for many years. Immigrants from many different regions live in the area, which is very particular due to its multicultural spirit, the social differences it harbors, and its history. The neighborhood features more characteristics, such as its buildings of functional style –monoblocks or “Gründerzeit”– and some elevated crime rates (supposedly the highest of the city). With eyes like the ones of a local passer-by, Sallmann creates an almost kaleidoscope-like vision that is subject to motion through the effect of circulating on board of the different means of transportation that go through this area with heavy traffic. Faces, street noises, the light, the dark, the speed and the stillness: Berlin Neukölln proposes a sensorial approach, almost like a physical experience that immerses us in a neighborhood’s rhythm and its particular impressions.
