Synopsis

The opening image of this one-of-a-kind documentary sets the tone for what we’re about see: shooting from a small boat drifting calmly in one of Rio de Janeiro’s bahías, the filmmakers follow a ray of light into the horizon. This scene, which contains no words, is a tribute to the splendor of the Brazilian landscape as well as the formal experimentation of the grouping of films made from February to May 1970 under the Belair banner by the filmmakers Júlio Bressane and Rogério Sganzerla and the actress Helena Ignez. The two directors met at a film festival in 1969 and set in motion the energetic project which resulted in seven largely improvised docufictions. Unfortunately, they were never shown and have always remained an enigmatic footnote to the powerful thrust of creativity of the 1960’s new waves. The directors of Belair combine audio fragments as well as contemporary and archival footage of Bressane and Sganzerla, their actors, and other informal associates along with extensive clips of the films themselves to recall –as well as build upon– this largely unknown history.
