Synopsis

A shy Australian girl who’s mistreated within her environment becomes a pen friend of a New York fat, withdrawn, and mentally handicapped man. On high-speed mode and with a child story-like voice-over, Mary and Max portrays the life of these characters through postal exchange. But this is isn’t a film for kids, and not just because the landscapes are gray and brownish (although there are some specifically placed details of color). Actually, Mary and Max features illnesses, various miseries, alcoholism, suicide, loneliness, depression, psychoactive drugs, abandon, and cruelty. But there’s also friendship, warmth, tenderness, and lots and lots of love in every possible color. A small gem of clay animation, Mary and Max molds –with a clear conscience of style– its fierce Humanism and permanent amazement with life and those people living it; and turns writing and friendship into a shelter against any kind of evil. It’s an emotionally omnivorous film.
