Synopsis
In Cuchillo de palo, Paraguayan filmmaker Renate Costa makes several portraits: of his uncle Rodolfo; of her family (specially her father); of the repression of homosexuals during Alfredo Stroessner’s regime; and of the fear and prejudices still rooted down in Paraguayan society. Even if we can see the filmmaker leading the interviews, the first person is only a faint enunciation mark set within a context of modesty, respect, and the right distance to her own family’s story. Uncle Rodolfo was persecuted, incarcerated, and repressed; he was also one of the gay people included in “the 108”, a list that would turn the number itself into a stigma. Rodolfo, as it is told in the film, died of sadness. With singular sensibility, concision and rigor, Costa makes a really opened political and personal film –the interviews with her father Pedro and the description of a wake create a particular impact– which moves the spectator using the finest of resources.
