Synopsis

The premise of this documentary is to spend a year following the horses of a Southern Ireland stud farm as they eat, walk around, and setup their racing performance. But Liz Mermin had already proven, in Office Tigers (Bafici ‘07), that she has a good eye for finding characters in even the dullest environments. In Horses, incredibly as it seems, the characters are the horses themselves, who we become close to and learn to recognize in just a few minutes. The huge and indifferent Joncol, the playful and insecure Ardalan, the nervous Cuan Na Gra, they all show their strong and soft points, as well as their personality, from the hand of the trainers, jockeys, and managers placed at their service, but also from gestures and attitudes recorded directly by the camera. In the meantime, the film shows a complex and expensive structure that depends entirely on what the horses feel like doing on the day of the race. There’s only one talking horse in the world, but thanks to Mermin’s skills these horses don’t have the need to speak. Mr. Ed would be jealous.
