Synopsis
In Islamic religion, the muezzin is the person in charge of calling out everyone (singing out loud) to the session of pray at the mosque five times a day. His voice reaches an entire people through the speakers that are spread all around the city. The muezzin is a hierarchical figure with its resulting social and economical rise, a paradoxical and unique situation in Islam, which considers a sin to follow a musical career. Sebastian Brameshuber’s camera follows a singing teacher and his students, who wish to become the next muezzin through a prestigious contest that takes place in Istanbul. And so, the reality show in its singing contest format has made it to Islam, with the precision of a documentary that, apart from being an intimate portrait of religion in today’s Turkey, carries a big emotional charge; not just because of the competitive pressures, but thanks to each one of the voices that tear themselves apart to reach heaven.
