Synopsis
Original Title: Politist, adjectiv
After the international success of his first film?12:08 East of Bucharest, Corneliu Porumboiu became a festival favorite once again with?Police, Adjective, a film that made a long trip since its first screening in Cannes 2009. Present in almost every shot, the main character Cristi (Dragos Bucur) is a young policeman who spends his days following a student thought to be smoking marijuana. Free from any kind of police-story mannerism, the film breaks down the genre and gives back to the police work the amount of confusion, bureaucracy and boredom that “real” policemen experience. To cap it all, Cristi is not sure if there’s any point in what he’s doing, and he’s aware that he works as a battering ram (a tiny one, but a piece, never the less) of a system that lacks the ideological support that used to have in the past. His thoughts come up, reluctantly, during long conversations with his superiors where he must justify his actions, which sometimes border the illegal. The film’s title comes from one of those debates, and reflects Porumboui’s intention the fact of placing the story’s climax in an answer that is overheard while the characters look up something in a dictionary.
