Synopsis

The so-called classical music is filled with obsessive characters, and not just among its interpreters. Stefan Knüpfer is a merry piano tuner who works for the prestigious house Steinway and lives among the corridors of the Vienna Konzerthaus. His job: satisfying the needs of the several piano players who come to the city for their concerts and recording sessions. This documentary follows him around for a season and reveals us the backstage of these events. Knüpfer is in no way less meticulous than his clients and he doesn’t hesitate before disarming a peg box and change every piece to get the right timbre. The amount of pianos he has at his disposal, against what one might expect, doesn’t make his job any easier. An important part of the work consists in convincing the interpreter that you are in tune with his concerns: for some of them, like the demanding Pierre-Laurent Aimard –who we see here about to record Bach’s The Art of Fugue– the search for the perfect sound is a far-distant and yet still mandatory utopia.
