Synopsis
In “Pienso en vos”, Santiago Motorizado, a genius of local independent rock (and now, with Ocio, maybe also of cinema) sings that “among my records I have the best of all: 69 love songs”. He’s not the only one who thinks that way: the importance, scope, and influence of 69 love songs –the beautiful conceptual triple album released in 1999 by The Magnetic Fields– is still expanding. This documentary describes, precisely, the growing period that goes from the end of that historic recording to the studio sessions of Realism, the recently released new album from the “no synths” trilogy that’s completed with i (2004) and Distortion (2008). Ten years, three records, and countless hours, gigs, conversations, and trips shared with Stephin Merritt, the band’s generally elusive composer and singer, are cramped into 90 minutes that reveal the creative process and the bonds between the Magnetic Fields members. And all that will surely make the strange powers of Merritt and his band –named after a Breton novel– still remain in our dreams for a long time.
