Synopsis

A complex genius of clay animation, Bruce Bickford creates out of a sort of a microscopic and unique handicraft system; he uses a perpetual movement of forms that melt together and sustain hallucinated universes –as proven by his collaborations with Franz Zappa in the 1970s. With his eccentric madness acting as a method, a secluded and lost Bickford lives his life –which has turned into one of his delirious and perfect models– frame by frame and at his own speed, involving the strangest way of working out that transforms him into yet another of his animated creatures. Brett Ingram takes a close look into Bickford´s strange world, from his traumatic family history with an Alzheimer suffering father to his work techniques with clay and his extraordinary cartoons. Out of the portraits of suburban artists, this is probably one of the most sensitive in its quirkiness, sharing the same intensity as Terry Zwigoff’s Crumb and Jeff Feuerzeig’s The Devil and Daniel Johnston.
