Synopsis

What does the group of new young filmmakers from Philipines and Jacques Rivette have in common? Very few things, but they both seem to agree on the fact that a film’s length is essential to create its atmosphere. In Sanchez’s film, length is a purely sensorial issue: everything can be erased, everything is a remnant, there’s nothing apart from the image’s present. Guerrilla filmmaking or cinematographic notebook, Sewer explodes in every direction, twirls unceasingly within a diverse group of teens and post-adolescents who do everything inside a sewer. The film detaches in an almost tactile way the unbearable heat and sole breath of air coming from the dirty, brownish water. In the sewer and its surroundings you can find anything: multiple and sweaty hardcore sex, every kind of drug, domesticated cockroaches, blood, and even pubic hair. Sanchez breaks off linearity, goes forward and backwards inside the loop, and sets up an experiment that has less to do with social denunciation than with the pleasure of filmmaking: to shoot bodies, water, rust, and small everyday tragedies.
