Synopsis

A Lebanese family lives in Neukölln, an immigrant’s neighborhood in Berlin. Their three children, Hassan, Lial, and Maradona, live within the hip hop world: the boys are breakdancers and Lial is a singer. The family conflict is not merely to survive in Germany, but also to avoid getting deported again, threaten as they always are by the immigration police. This documentary film by Agostino Imondi and Dietmar Ratsch follows the three main characters in order to reformulate streetdance and hip hop as ghetto counter culture, a new return to the roots of this culture that sprung from the 1970s New York Bronx. There’s a lot of direct-cinema intimacy, but also animated reconstructions with a documentary style in which stylization and physical realism coexist as closely as they do in the breakdance world. The film won the Crystal Bear for Best Film awarded by the Generation 14plus jury in this year’s Berlinale.
