Synopsis
Original title: Përtej rrugës
Sometimes, making one unnoticed mistake is all it takes. For the main character in Beyond the Road, the error was not saying anything right when he should have. His punishment: being plunged into an unreal world, a sort of parallel purgatory where the only thing he can do is wait. The film’s heavy, rusty climate recalls the one in Stalker. This is a pretty strong compliment for a first film from a country that didn’t exist on the map until two years ago (Kosovo), and whose right to independence is still a subject of debate within the international community. In fact, Beyond the Road was premiered at the Film Festival of Pristina, the Kosovar capital. It was the only local film screened and its shooting (on digital video) took more than five years. Director Yll Citaku makes a living out of the assignments from his video production company. “It’s impossible to concentrate when you’re fighting for survival”, he says in reference to his country’s frail economy. So, his flawless first feature has an even bigger merit.
