Synopsis

On a roadside, Vittorio (an Italian man, apparently unemployed and homeless) finds Kate, a woman who’s in the middle of her mourning period –like John Wayne in She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. He helps her with her car. She invites him to the small circus where she used to work. The circus artists are filmed in a sequence shot –honestly and without tricks– as they rehearse their acts. During the breaks in the rehearsals, Kate’s angel Vittorio slowly starts to connect with the troupe, and undertakes the task of saving the princess from the pain of her loss. He does it through art and spectacle. In Around a Small Mountain, Jacques Rivette goes back to that same area where he made La belle noiseuse. He replaces theater –a strong presence in his work– with the circus; the ghosts, with a guarding angel; his long durations, with a length of less than an hour and a half. And yet, he maintains his essence: the vindication of art and its importance in life.
