Synopsis

A film essayist who creates delicate lullabies out of difficult subjects such as colonialism and racial and economic inequity, John Torres collects fragments and then weaves them together in a dense fabric that’s equal parts Borges, Resnais and Rouch. Refrains..., aside from having perhaps one of the loveliest titles of any film in recent memory, is the third and best feature to date by a film artist who seems to have found all of the tools he needed right at the start, and has kept making films modestly and at his own pace. Shooting mostly in long takes from discreet angles, and using constant voice-over narration, Torres recounts a story which may be fiction, may be part documentary, and which unfolds in a language (Hiligaynon) that even he doesn’t understand. The subtitles in the film don’t correspond to the actual dialogue, but that’s the point: Torres is interested in their sounds, their musicality, and he derives an entirely new layer of fiction out of them.
