Synopsis

Original title: Kimi to arukou

Between 2006 and 2007, Yuya Ishii directed four films that won her the Edward Yang Award –in its first edition– to the best promise of Asian cinema. After taking a break, she now returns with To Walk Beside You, a comedy that tells the ambiguous story of a village teacher and one of her students. Akemi is 34 and is divorced; Norio is a country boy who wants to escape from his fate. Together they set up in Tokyo, where Akemi will help Norio with his studies. Akemi doesn’t know Norio is falling in love with her; Norio doesn’t know Akemi is working in a karaoke bar. Ishii says she based the film in rakugo, a sort of ‘sit down comedy’ –because in Japan the comedian remains seated. ‘The characters in rakugo stories are usually very nice people, but they always make mistakes. I wanted to make a simple comedy with the subtle nuance of Rakugo. Life’s ludicrousness and pathos are two sides of the same coin.’
