Synopsis

Original Title: Fanshan

Fans of linear narratives featuring a single heroic character are not the ideal audience for this surprising film by Yang Rui. After spending three years in Wa –at the Chinese-Burman border– she managed to condense even more stories than in her first film, The Bimo Records. Crossing... is the result of exploring that place, and the crossing is not just the mountain crossing, but also the weaving of stories –about youth, the shadow and primitive fury of the past, the danger, the threatened nature– that progressively grow before the spectator’s eyes. Almost like a coda or a complement of the focus on Chinese documentaries programmed in this BAFICI, Crossing… is an elusive evidence of the vitality of a different kind of Chinese filmmaking, one that is current and ethereal, vast in ideas, and which stays away from calculated academicism, flying warriors, and histories of long gone dynasties.
