Synopsis

Original Title: 17 avgusta

“Life sentence. Risk of escape. Aggressive. Three murders”, that is what is written at Boris Bezotechestvo’s cell door. Like Citizen Kane’s “No trespassing” sign, that warning is there only for the camera to ignore, and that’s what Alexander Gutman does as he fearlessly infiltrates the perennial intimacy of a regular day in the life of a convicted felon. Without any stylization and keeping itself from making prison survival into a spectacle –miles away from the gruesomeness of a prison’s reality show–, this documentary manages to capture every nuance of Bezotechestvo’s lonely routine, from his energetic impulses to his reclusive sadness. However, that record of the interior’s plain reality is confronted with the images of the island scenery that surrounds the prison, a landscape of gelid beauty that follows the best tradition of Russian cinema’s visual magnificence. And in between those bordering and porous worlds, freedom and reclusion, death and survival, they all follow each other in a game of exchanges routed by a fine eye.
