Synopsis

Original Title: Briefe nicht über die Liebe

Victor Shklovski (1893-1984) wrote Zoo or Letters Not About Love during his exile in Berlin, between 1922 and 1923. This book is regarded as one of the most conclusive tales of Russian exiles who, like him, were living in the area near the Berlin Zoo. The story took the shape of an epistolary novel displaying a particular style, which Bernard Sallmann tales advantage of by using letter fragments. Between anecdotes, landscape descriptions, literary theory, and varied thoughts, the main issue emerges as the one of an unrequited love. “About the spring, the Prager Diele (a café and meeting point for Russian exiles), Ehrenburg, the pipes, the passing time, the mouth removed and the heart plunging as soon as the other mouth´s color goes away”. This kind of fragments from Shklovski’s writings trigger a complex montage that’s made of images and sounds of contemporary Berlin and, in the end, meditates on living a new life and longing for something that is gone.
