Synopsis

Veronica Chen’s choice for a title, so clearly associated with Italo Svevo’s Short Sentimental Trip, is also quite curious. It’s curious because Svevo’s trip was the one of an old man who assessed certain episodes with nostalgia, warmth, and the occasional tenderness, but sentiment made him feel younger, as if the trip itself was an act of vampirism he performed to regain youth. But, maybe, the title is not that curious, and is rather an inversion of Svevo’s procedures. Because in A Sentimental Journey, Chen looks back in time as if she felt herself ageing yet knowing she’s still young; and as if the “almost” absolute succession of still photographs –without spoiling the surprising ending– would restore her the experiences that left a temporary mark. The precarious materials and a succinct, measured off-voice both sow a basting thread that is always zigzagging, just like memories. There’s nothing exceptional in A Sentimental Journey, and that rustic, inglorious effect is the best definition of being human that cinema can provide.
