Synopsis

Original title: Chitaem ‘Blokadnuyu knigu’

The origin of The Book of Blockade, by Russian authors Daniil Granin and Ales Adamovich, goes back to the 60s, when they both gathered and wrote down the stories of a group of people who survived the almost 900 days of the Stalingrad (today, Saint Petersburg) siege carried on by the Germans during World War II, where a million people died, soldiers and civilians. Based on that experience, Sokurov gathers a diverse group of people in a studio (children, professionals, elderly people, students, artists, soldiers) so they will read passages of the book. As they face those words from the past describing death, hunger, cannibalism, and destruction, the occasional actors (and also the spectator, by extension) are confronted with a reality that forces them to reconnect with those stories from the comfort and safety of their own present lives.
