Synopsis

A summer with the same vitality and uncertainty as an adolescence that’s coming to its end, or is rather at that precise moment when childhood games start to be nostalgic memories of an idealized past. Seventeen year-old Isaac moves away from school and starts a series of infamous misfortunes with no direction or map, sealing his friendship with Ben and his girlfriend Lila. Zach Weintraub’s first film depicts a luminous summer of initiation using no emphasis, through a black & white cinematography that manages to conceal any sentimentality without extracting the valuable feeling of freedom that’s typical in such an experience. Weintraub made this film after graduating from Tisch, the same school where Jarmush went (you can see traces of him as a radical starting point in Bummer Summer); and the film rightfully fo-llows that tradition of formal simplicity and visually purified storytelling. It moves away from any kind of search for dramatic or aesthetic effect (typical of American cinema) –and even from certain bad habits of today’s independent films– and goes up against the challenge of making primitively revelatory cinema.
