Synopsis
Everything takes place the day Peping, a young student in Manila’s police academy, gets married. Tempted by the thought of making some extra money as he’s about to become a father, he agrees to join a couple of corrupt cops on a shady night mission: kidnapping a prostitute and locking her up in a basement. By the end of the day, Brillante Mendoza enters a new stage: he leaves aside the naturalist wedding bells and goes deep into thriller territory with a hint of horror. He passes through some genre commonplaces –the basement, the night time, the violence, the gore– and runs them through a filter of realism. Most of Kinatay takes place in a car, with a hand-held camera attached to the main character in the middle of the dark, and an abrasive soundtrack that goes with him in his descent into hell. That darkness is where Peping’s moral debate starts to build up. Winner of the Best Director award in Cannes with this film, Mendoza takes on the genre with a confident grip: he follows its rules, but turns them over and shifts it into a blunt realism.
