Synopsis
An intelligently made revenge thriller has become a real rarity in a time when the facile torture porn of the Saw films dominates theater screens. British director Simon Rumley’s latest feature after 2006’s The Living and the Dead centers on Erica, an Austin resident who wanders coldly and compulsively into strange men’s beds. Working at a hardware store, she develops a bizarre but affectionate bond with Nate, a former Iraq war vet with a propensity to torture and kill small animals. Along the way, Erica also meets and elopes with Frankie, a musician with dreams of rock star success, and who is suddenly faced with a grave problem after spending the night with Erica. After a good dose of patient exposition, the complications and clever plot twists kick in as Nate emerges decisively as Erica’s sinister guardian angel.
