Synopsis
At first sight, the director of Fist in His Pocket doesn’t seem like the best choice for directing a period biopic, those films in which the wardrobe and set design are as important as the heroes, who are usually corseted into historic truth. But Bellochio doesn’t take just any figure: he focuses on Benito Mussolini, and his perspective –tangential and particular– is the one of an up until recently unknown lover of him. Ida Dalser (Giovanna Mezzogiorno) was a young burgoise woman who squandered her fortune on an early journalistic adventure with the future Duce. In exchange, he gave her a son –his first born, as she tells everyone who crosses her way– before disappearing forever. From then on, Ida’s world progressively shrinks into a labyrinth of lawyers, doctors, nuns, and psychiatrists who will hide the identities of Ida and her son Benito. Passion and pride give way to an obsessive and sick world, where Ida’s life is reduced to one single and impossible objective: to be recognized by the man she loves.
