Synopsis
The very first structuralist sitcom? Yes indeed, but also a lot more: from a cooking show shot in real time to a rigorous cinematographic experiment that uses only nine shots with different camera positions to show us a family –the parents and their daughter, who happens to be the filmmaker, to be precise– as they cook and taste a generous ration of dumplings (those baked pieces of dough that went horrific in Fruit Chan’s film). Boring and predictable? Not at all. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Deep down, Oxhide II (sadly, I haven’t seen the first one) is a surprising comedy made –like every great comedy– out of the most daily elements, anecdotes, and characters. And it is also the proof that there’s nothing farther from rhetoric and artifice than the avant-garde itself. Bon appétit!
