Synopsis
Even when words like “reality show” and “fashion” could be easily linked to today’s breakdance and hip hop scene, it seems that it would be quite hard to remove the essence of its original belonging, back in 1970s New York, when it surfaced as a street dance associated to a certain form of resistance and multicultural dynamism of new urban identities. Now, Turn It Loose finally projects it to a global level, documenting a tournament where a group of young people, mostly born far away from breakdancing (in time and space), are faced in a contest where their bodies display a series of poses not even digital effects can emulate in their right kinetic measure. Those dance battles have a kind of sporting emotional quality, but there’s also a politics of hope, of change and action for a new world beyond globalization, a change of perspectives wished for by those young men from Senegal, Korea, Algeria, USA, and Japan, among others, who invade the streets and public spaces to brake the existence of bodies as mechanisms disciplined by neoliberalism.
