Synopsis
Original Title: Hoe-ori ba-ram
Tae-hoon goes away for the weekend with his girlfriend, Mi-jeong. They’re both teenagers who have escaped without permission. When they return all hell breaks loose, and the families force the couple to split up. Faced with this, they take different stances: he tries to keep in touch with Mi-jeong, but she doesn’t respond in the same way. Meanwhile, the young man must learn to make his own living; work replaces school, and loneliness becomes something he will have to get used to. First-time director Jang Kun-jae brings up such a natural feeling from his actors, and the story is so detailed, that some critics got to believe it was based in an autobiographical experience. Regardless of the source, the truth is that Eighteen works because of the way it tells its story. During its slow course –occasionally interrupted by some peaks of action (and underhand humor)– what happened that weekend is showed in a fragmented flashback, with parts that work as stages in Tae-hoons’ journey towards a maturity he may not wish, but he does need.
