
Ousmane Sembène

He was born in Ziguinchor, Senegal, in 1923. He fought in World War II and was a trade unionist in France before starting a successful literary career with Le Docker noir (1956). Considered the “father of African cinema,” he directed ten feature films, including Borom Sarret (1963), Guelwaar (1992) and Moolaadé (2004). He died in Dakar, Senegal, in 2007.
