Synopsis
While talking about Decasia –one of the several interventions on celluloid that have a great presence in Bill Morrison’s work– J. Hoberman defined this American avant-garde artist as “not the first one that takes decaying celluloid as its raw material, but yet one of those who could submerge in that dark nitrate that belongs to our souls with a contagious abandonment”. Once again carrying decomposed nitrate under his arm, Morrison now works together with Danish musician Simon Christensen. For an hour, they both create a tribute to four US composers: Charles Ives, Conlon Nancarrow, Steve Reich and Trent Reznor, associating each of them to an element (water, earth, fire, and air). Christensen studied the use of the pulse in the works of these four composers, and Morrison did so in the internal life of each selected fragment. Precisely, what is analyzed here from an experimental perspective is this concept of “pulse” in society, nature, and the industry.
