Synopsis
Giacomo is 19 and he’s almost completely deaf. He spends a summer day wondering through the woods near the north Italian border with his friend Stefania. They walk seeking a place to access the river and swim, few words are mentioned (they know each other too well), they walk some more, they get tired, they put together a picnic, they continue walking and arrive at an amusement park. That is almost everything that happens in Comodin’s first film, winner of the Golden Leopard in the Filmmakers of the Present section of the Locarno Film Festival. That is “almost” because, near the end of the movie, a revelation we shouldn’t spoil takes place. A turning point that makes us rethink everything we have seen so far, and softly pushes this luminous, tender, and sensual coming of age story (even if Giacomo and Stefania barely touch each other) towards the obscure and ambiguous world of the end of innocence. It’s a world where Comodin extracts a quiet tension out of the characters’ backs (evoking the Dardenne brothers’ films) and imposes it with the strength of a wild drum solo.
