Synopsis
Beautiful Hemel’s sexual encounters are chance-driven, frequent, intense, and unpredictable. But they’re also a sport and dramatic practice pushed to the limit, like a compulsion or a manic exercise that leaves a melancholic taste. Since the death of her mother, Hemel has become closer to her father Gijs, whose love affairs seem to be the sensual opposite to his daughter’s volcanic ones, and she never holds back her harsh comments on each of her dad’s new candidates. If all film debuts are synonyms with expectation, this one by Sacha Polak not only meets the standard of that common place, but also enables a larger horizon by turning lead actress Hannah Hoekstra’s stealing beauty into little more than a subterfuge, a mere short cut to talk about the things that have always worried human beings: the loneliness of anonymous cities, the difficulty to make an emotional commitment, and the fickle oscillations of character. A film so provocative that it becomes explosive.
