Synopsis
Through still shots and pure observation, Jonathan Perel registers monuments that were built by law in all of those locations where there used to be detention and torture centers, during the last military dictatorship in Argentina. The first shot in this movie shows us a guideline on how each of these monuments should be constructed. The next seventeen shots show the different interpretations of such disposition, by means of a keen observation of the monuments that already exist. These first still shots of astounding dramatic strength and exact duration allow Perel to pose, once again, a big, clever, radical, bold, and profoundly political question about the way in which memory, truth and justice are built nowadays in Argentina. If El predio showed a critical point of view regarding the past and present in the grounds of the ESMA, 17 monumentos fixes an extreme position and a thorough view on the way cinema can reflect on an entire country, building a new map of the Argentine territory.
