Synopsis
Edificio España (España Building): a solid, grand, Neo-Baroque skyscraper in Madrid. Height: 117 meters. Built between 1948 and 1953, it became an emblematic building for Franco’s dictatorship, and the “it” building in the 50’s and 60’s. Franco’s ruling ended and the building kept on standing. It was emptied a few years ago, and an integral and ambitious reform began. This movie registers from within this mutating process. With common elements with Guerin’s Work in Progress and Rulfo’s In the Pit, director Víctor Moreno presents a very attractive documentary that coexists with chance, and the idea –or rather the fatality– of conducting a revolution in one space. And as it tends to happen with revolutions, one can’t tell if what is being destroyed could be rebuilt or even transformed into something else. Workers from all over the world are a sign of Spain’s current situation as it is the excruciating presence of the financial and real estate crisis. Between daily work and the weight of history, Edificio España reveals once again that architecture and cinema can both be scars of their time.
