Synopsis

Although Yugoslavia has disappeared as a country, it still exists in the movies: that’s how it became a purely cinematographic nation. And that’s the subject of this documentary, which depicts almost fifty years in the building of a national identity through cinema. From a thorough archive research, Serbian filmmaker Mila Turajlic managed to narrate the epic dimension of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, focusing especially on the cinephile taste of Josip Broz (Marshal Tito, the Prime Minister between 1963 and 1980), as it is told by his private projectionist, an extraordinary character named Leka Konstantinovic. With anthological cameos by Alfred Hitchcock and Orson Welles, this history of Yugoslavian cinema is a complete album of images from the height of the war genre in its ultimate anti-Nazi version, as well as the chronicle of a megalomaniac production drive that exceeds any verisimilitude, and, above all, a luxurious catalog of the lost, adventurous greatness of industrial cinema.
