It could’t happen any other way. David Lynch had already had Isabella Rosselini as a muse and sentimental partner in his first feature film Eraserhead¸ where he experimented with the rhythm of silent cinema and electronic sounds. Therefore, it wasn’t long before she became Guy Maddin’s favorite actress, being that he is the modern filmmaker who has best explored the possibilities of expression and photogenic spirit of silent films applied to stories that are more experimental, documentary-like, or have more loose structures. Rossellini is present in Keyhole, where black and white taps more into a typical aesthetics of film noir (absorbed by the imaginary of this Canadian director) rather than the first years of cinema –as in Archangel (1990) or the short film The Heart of the World (2000). There are echoes of Homer’s Odyssey and therefore also from Ford’s The Searchers, in the story of a gangster named Ulysses, who returns home after being absent for three years, together with a drowned girl and a strange hostage.
