Synopsis
No road is too small if you know how to observe it. In small roads, James Benning continues his deconstruction of his country’s landscape, which he has being carrying out throughout his entire body of work. Now, he records 47 roads that cross the Unites States territory. Throughout the two years of recording, the roads are run through by the seasons and the calendar that change their appearance, as well as vehicles and animals, all of which define the essence of the film according to Benning himself. This is just what he did on his other 1991 road movie North on Evers –where he revisited the American West on a motorcycle– except here the record is digital and the viewpoint is static. Different but similar, precise, and made with enough intelligence to let the spectator engage in the task of interpreting a country’s identity, small roads constitutes a new step on the way –definitely not small– by one of the main filmmakers in US cinema today.
