Tabu is an extraordinary film divided into two parts. In the second one, a voice “from the present” explains to us what we see. We listen to this narration while we watch “silent” cinema. Please forgive the quotation marks, but they are merely trying to emphasize Miguel Gomes’ inventiveness: Tabu is paradoxical, productively paradoxical. In the first part we are introduced to a kind woman, her old neighbor with a severe maid, and other secondary characters. Humor may appear as a lucid discharge, with dialogues that follow João César Monteiro’s tradition. But Tabu not only evokes that filmmaker and his existential comedy, and resigned profoundness. There are also echoes from silent films featuring African stories like Mogambo and Hatari, and even Murnau-Flaherty’s previous film of the same title. There’s humor, passion, adventures, precision, intrigue, a great love story, and a crocodile we met in the prologue. Gomes conveys emotion by evoking, echoes from the past that continue to blossom still. These ghosts from the past are far from mournful: Tabu is revitalizing cinema. Even The Ramones become alive at the border of a swimming pool. Watch and listen to believe.
