Synopsis
Romanticism seems to belong exclusively to French art-house cinema. When I say romanticism, I mean that ideal from the 18th or 19th century, like when Camille –the main character in Mia Hansen-Løve’s third feature– says “if you leave me, I will throw myself to the Seine”. These kind of feelings always seem somewhat outdated, as if they where trying to show that its characters and ideals (and therefore their cinema) have travelled from the past. It’s not a stiff pose, nothing seems false. Hansen-Løve delivers this kind of films with staggering fluency. More so in this case, where she seems to be talking to us in autobiographic terms and merely trading cinema for architecture. And one must recognize the architectonic metaphor is extremely suggestive: a neat and livable space, the same way love should be. And cinema also.
