Synopsis

“In 1911, Canada became the first country in the world to have a federal agency of national parks. As a commemoration of that hundred year anniversary, 52 artists embarked in an expedition to capture the majestic nature of the landscapes through music and films. 13 filmmakers, 39 musicians, 13 national parks”. That’s the introduction for these collection of short films that resulted from the collaboration of talented people like Melissa auf der Mar (former bassist of Hole and Smashing Pumpkins) or Catherine Martin (director of L’Esprit des lieux and Dans les villes) who of course express the incredible diversity of Canada’s cultural life as well as its nature. The National Parks Project goes from Sirmilik, near the North Pole, to Nova Scotia’s cliffs and forests, and features spectacular air and submarine shots that form abstract collages and also conventional (yet hypnotic) travel journals. These elements –combined with the soundtrack’s ambient music and folk songs– fulfill one of art’s oldest goals: to make us travel through our senses, transporting us.
