Synopsis
As it already happened in Joy Division, you could say this is a perfectly conventional documentary, at least since it’s structured in a series of interviews. The thing is Grant Gee usually keeps only the voices and relegates the faces to a discreet background and –sometimes literally– the shades and darkness. The voices of the people interviewed (Iain Sinclair, Tacita Dean, among others), the music of The Caretaker (Schubert’s “Winterreise” emerging from oblivion) and, of course, W.S. Sebald’s The Rings of Saturn (read by Jonathan Pryce) still survive, because this film, rather than a documentary about Sebald, is a tour through the landscapes of Suffolk that inspired the German author for his tour through that region of Eastern England. A landscape film that ends up becoming the best possible literary adaptation.
