Synopsis
After years of working as a producer for Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, Prates returned to film directing with this very hard melodrama that follows the suffering of Estela de Maria Silvia, a maid who lives constantly escaping nowhere. Tired of the everyday violence she suffers at the house where she works, Estela decides to escape. She carries only a bundle of belongings on her head. She gets attacked at a gas station bar and gets rescued by a truck driver, who will end up dumping her in a whore house. It’s there where a poet proposes to her and invites her to move to the country, but later he is wounded and dies. There’s no dream of a better life that will last a lot for Estela, who searches for redemption and leaves everything behind to work in a factory. When problems catch up with her, her flee from underemployment, prostitution, asphyxia, and the hypocrisy of the Mineiro interior areas will have only one possible destination: Belo Horizonte, the great city that, from its very name, holds something mythical and promising in its very name.
