Synopsis
“In Minas at the time of the dictatorship, filmmakers who are tormented by the characters in their films ask a devastating question: why are women so beautiful? None of them make the mistake of thinking that the reason is how they dress. Even when women are well covered, the male instinct can appropriate their nudity through their clothes. Men need only to observe with concentrated desire”. This extravagant (anti) synopsis presented Prates’ latest film at the Gramado Festival in 2007 –where it would end up picking up the award for Best Brazilian Film. It was a strange text and yet quite fitting for a film object that resists any attempt of classification. Mixing his autobiography with fragments of his films and others that marked his life, Prates (psycho)analyzes his relationship with Brazilian cinema (and not just Brazilian, since we can also see a picture of John Wayne somewhere) and builds a sort of metaphysic film essay that is consistent with his idea of cinema as an endless source of questions.
