Synopsis
A woman supporting her entire family with her job. A daughter engaged to be married who falls in love with a man that’s older than her. A young son addicted to drugs. Unwanted pregnancies, relationships that are almost incestuous, illegitimate children, infidelities, and unrequited love: these are the characters and situations featured in Blood of my Blood, an impeccable title for what it reveals, and the way it presents it. Is it a movie or a soap-opera condensed in a cinematographic format? João Canijo’s latest film is not just a great melodrama; it can also be seen as the greatest melodrama of our time. Excessive, of course. With agitated emotions, and above all, a film style where the off-screen action rules. The camera’s movement is contagious (and necessary), and there are extremely anthological shots such us the one where two young men argue in a room while two little girls sit next-door, in a kitchen that is only separated by a thin wall (as if they were two separate screens).
