Synopsis
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is made of wax. Its sensitive materials are pure, soft and slow. Its plot is, up to a certain point, a front. That’s why the relative intelligibility of the information allows the spectator to float towards the buried sentimental environment in which the characters move. In the first scene, someone urges someone else to suspect of the mainstream of information, and this is relevant because Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a deviated mainstream film, since it’s an European production more focused on aesthetic formalism than the austere and/or arrogant narrative functionalism of the American machine. The thorough art direction places shiny surfaces and piers, matching the pinpoint accuracy of reframes and travelling shots –as methodical rather than vertiginous questionings– and the flashbacks of contained subjectivity. This way the film forms a distant and sensual view, as perverted as those spies who keep quiet about lots of things and lie with their smiles more than with words.
