Synopsis
Three masterpieces of Peter von Bagh in the short form. First, a portrait of Olavi Virta, Finnish tango’s greatest voice, a national icon seen as an old, lost and a lonely man. Second, an homage to Karl Marx, in which a hundred years after the great 19th-century German philosopher’s demise, ordinary people from many nations gathered around his grave to talk about his legacy. And finally, sights and tunes from postwar Finland interspersed with quotes from Mika Waltari’s classic of popular historical fiction, Sinuhe egyptiläinen (1945). A lean work, clear in its conception, straight-forward in its execution, muscular in its movement, and deep in its thoughts. Three films that prove Von Bagh’s cinema is based on his sensibility to human emotions.
