Synopsis

In the same (animated) fashion of Waking Life or the Archer series, the Czech film Alois Nebel applies Wonderturner techniques (animation over recorded live action). But in this case, the technique is used by animator Tomás Lunák to (wonderfully) recreate a literally black and white world, a rough noir spirit (also in its tones) that’s more rebellious to the genre’s rules and the preciosity involved in the Wonderturner. By setting the story on the Polish-German border in the Czech Republic, Lunák seems to be whispering in the ear of Expressionism (given his geographic proximity). But even more than spectacular features or huge camera angles, his animation filters a strange mix of melancholy and horror, like staining humidity pouring out of the walls. The gradual insanity of the main character (who, like the film itself, sees ghosts from the history of Central Europe) is the perfect excuse for Lunák to create a visual world as narrow as it is extravagant, and as accomplished as it is functional to its storytelling
