Synopsis

In 1970, Prates shot his first film in the historic city of Sabará. The fact that the lead was a black actor –very unusual in Brazilian cinema back in those days– was the least strange thing about Crioulo doido, a local expression used to describe nonsense, delirium. As Prates himself explained, he had combined “racism with social ascent and quotes to Mizoguchi’s Ugetsu”, and made a film about Estela and Amigo da Família’s project to drive successful tailor Felisberto crazy and therefore take his money. Silent films’ elements (like simple framings, highly contrasted black and white cinematography, and intertitles, as well as exaggerated acting performances that balance between being mischievous and sarcastic), are all typical features of Prates’ work, and they appear already well crafted here in this bursting fantasy the director re-edited not long ago, cutting 17 minutes without trimming any of its fascinating ambiguity. The ambiguity that led a critic to write that Crioulo doido may very well be “local drama, a comedy about a rascal, or a Third World scientific fiction”.
